The Fourth Annual Graduate Research Symposium
Thursday, May 3, 2012
Lucy Ellis Lounge and FLB Atrium
Invited speakers
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will host its third Annual SLATE Graduate Research Symposium on Thursday, May 3, 2012 (9:00 am – 5:30 pm). This year, the symposium will feature lectures by two distinguished scholars in the area of Second Language Acquisition: Dr. Jerry Packard (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Dr. Mirjam Broersma (Max Planck Institute).
There will also be two poster sessions during which graduate students in SLATE will present their current research.
Poster sessions
In addition to the featured talks, SLATE will be sponsoring two poster sessions in order for SLATE graduate students to showcase their research projects. Presenters must be available on Thursday, May 3, 2012 to discuss their poster with the audience. So that students who present posters also have a chance to see the other posters, this year we will split the poster session into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each student will present in the morning or in the afternoon, but should be available during both poster sessions.
Each student will present only one poster but they can co-author other posters if their co-author(s) can present the posters. If a single student wishes to present two separate posters, such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis; if the request is approved, the two posters will be assigned to different poster sessions.
Since there will not be a formal abstract review process, the submissions must be endorsed by at least one faculty member, and they should fit one of the following two categories:
Current class projects: Graduate students in SLATE can present studies completed for a course taken in Spring 2012 or earlier. These posters must have the endorsement of the faculty member for whom the coursework was completed. The poster should also state for which class this work was completed.
Other research: Graduate students in SLATE can present research conducted for their MA thesis or doctoral dissertation, or other research currently in preparation for publication. These posters must have the endorsement of the supervising faculty member(s).

Instructions for poster submissions
The posters must include a short introduction, a methodology section, a results section, and a discussion section. Outlines of studies yet to be completed are not acceptable. The size of the posters should be 24 x 36 inches.
Graduate students in SLATE who would like to present their research during this event should send a 150-word summary of their project to Prof. Tania Ionin tionin@illinois.edu by April 2,
2012. In their submission, students should indicate the name and email address of the supervising faculty member, who will be contacted for the endorsement. Notifications of acceptance will be sent after having received the summaries and faculty endorsements.
The presenters will be asked to submit their posters to Prof. Annie Tremblay atrembla@illinois.edu by April 27, 2012. The organizing committee will send the posters for printing, and the SLATE Program is anticipated to provide partial to complete funding for the posters (estimated to cost $28/each), depending on the number of submissions.
