EFFECTIVE FOR STUDENTS ENTERING A UIUC PH.D. PROGRAM IN FALL 1997
Students in the SLATE certificate
program are required to take a minimum of seven courses, distributed
across four areas as follows:
- Linguistics/language
structure (2 courses)
a. Ling/ANTH 400/300 Introduction to Linguistic Structure
AND
b. a course that
focuses on the structure(s) of English or a second language

- GER 465/366 Linguistics Structure of German
- GER 520/420 History of the German Language
- * ITAL 450/450 Italian Syntax and Phonology (some sections)

Please note the following:
- For topics courses marked
with an asterisk (*), only some sections satisfy SLATE requirements.
Prior to early registration each semester, the SLATE Executive Committee
will issue a list of the specific sections being offered the following
semester that will count toward satisfying SLATE course requirements.
- Courses applying toward
fulfillment of the SLATE course requirements must be taken for a
minimum of .75 units.
- Of the seven courses
required for the SLATE certificate, at least four (4) must be at
the 500-level.
- Students may petition
the SLATE Executive Committee to have courses taken elsewhere accepted
as equivalents for any of the UIUC courses on the list. At least
5 of the 7 required courses must be taken in residence at UIUC.
- LING 400 cannot
count toward SLATE certification, since the course is designed for
students who are not linguists.
